About the NBS NHS Blood and Transplant Publications Links to other sites Press releases Enter the NBS Hospitals site Bone Marrow Donor Tissue Donation Cord Blood Bank Jobs at the NBS Saving lives together As part of the Arm's Length Bodies review the National Blood Authority (NBA), which manages the National Blood Service, Bio Products Laboratory and the International Blood Group Reference Laboratory, and UK Transplant (UKT) has merged on 1 October 2005 to form a new organisation - NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT). This is a real opportunity as both organisations work to save and improve patients' lives. Last year alone more than 5,500 people benefited from having an organ or cornea transplant, whilst countless more benefited from receiving blood and blood products. The NBA and UKT will pool their experience of collecting and distributing blood, tissues and organs. NHSBT will be responsible for managing all the products and services currently provided by both organisations, including: • Promoting blood, tissue and organ donation to the
public The creation of NHSBT will maximise the strengths of both
organisations, further improve services to patients and donors and build
on the excellent collaborative work already underway. The work of both
the NBA and UKT is being reviewed to examine the scope for more effective
and efficient operation, further modernising them in line with the wider
