Free 'Session Searcher' Application for Mobile Devices

NHSBT is proud to announce the release of a free application for both Android and Apple (smartphones and tablets) that allows donors to search for blood donation sessions. Once they have found a session they can secure an appointment through the National Contact Centre, and share their activities on Facebook and Twitter. When the time comes to attend the session the application will provide route guidance through Google maps.

This first release of the application doesn’t require a username and password as no personal details are collected.

The next stage of development will work towards a complete mobile ‘portal’, scheduled for release in 2013. This will allow users to access personalised information about blood donation quickly and easily.

The application is simple to use and comprehensive integrated help is available, as well as guidance on giving blood.

• Which types of devices can run the application?
  Apple and Android smartphones and tablets
• Is there any difference using the application on a tablet rather than a smartphone?
  No. The application fits itself to different screen sizes with the functionality remaining the same for both tablets and smartphones.
• Is the application available for other mobile platforms such as BlackBerry and Windows Phone?
  Not at present, but we will be reviewing this in future. If you have any suggestions for other mobile platforms please let us know on mobilehelp@nhsbt.nhs.uk
• Is the application available on PCs and Macs?
  No, but if you visit www.blood.co.uk you will be able to do everything on your desktop that the mobile application offers
• Is the application free?
  Yes
• Why have you developed an application for mobile devices?
  It is very important that we can reach out to as many people as possible to help and encourage them to give blood. Increasingly people are using mobile devices to access websites. Therefore, it is important for NHSBT to cater for this audience.
• Why can’t I book an appointment on the application?
  This first release of the application doesn’t require users to log in or give personal details. Later versions of the application will have secure authentication and this will allow us to reflect your relationship with us, including booking appointments.
• Some of the venue location pins seem to be some distance from the venue.
  This is a known issue for a small number of venues and we will be correcting within our maps. In the meantime if you have any queries for venue locations please call the National Contact Centre on 0300 123 23 23, or email mobilehelp@nhsbt.nhs.uk.
• Is any of my personal information on my device or at NHS Blood and Transplant held in the application?
  No, absolutely not.
• How can I give feedback?
  From inside the application go to the ‘About page’ - Home screen, Info, About and press the ‘Email Support’ button. Alternatively you can email mobilehelp@nhsbt.nhs.uk
• I have more questions, who can help answer these?

• Why does the application provide links to Facebook and Twitter?
  We are pleased and proud that you are a blood donor, and we want to make it easy for you to share the experience through social media.
